Hi!

I am really interested in more ideas on Power Teaching. I've been teaching fourth graders now for eight years and I am looking for something new to implement for the upcoming year. I just watched a few of the videos. I would love to start my year with it. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Young people today do a lot of writing online with social media websites and with text messaging. Stanford University published a 5-year study of students' writing lives.

For the most part, students are most invested in their writing when it is linked to communication and socialization. Paul M. Rogers, who co-authored a similar writing study at Harvard, the main draw of such writing was that it was generally directed toward accomplishing an “immediate, concrete goal.”

Perhaps providing immediate incentives for writing would help students to more greatly appreciate the value of developing their writing skills.

Read the whole story about the Stanford study at:

Jenny,

We all take turns when we have something important to say. Or at least we should. I can't say that there's a "Bud the Teacher Effect," but if there were, I'd want it to be this -

If something that I can say/do/write inspires you to say/do/write something that will inspire the next person, and so on and so on, and along the way we all learn lots and say/do/write important things - well, that's pretty special, and an effect I can happily share my name with.

As an aside, the dandelion is going to be one of those sticky metaphors that will continue to influence my thinking for some time to come. So perhaps there's a Jenny Effect, as well.

What a nice post, Jennifer.
I appreciate the comments and I am sure Bud does, too. Fame is such a fickle ...

From my perspective, I was just as excited to be sitting next to you, sharing Twitter people and talking about technology and the clasroom.

I began blogging, just like you ... and it was when a friend from NWP said to me: What? You're not blogging? Why not? (This was Maria Angala, from DC, and we had done some blogging with our classes as virtual pen pals).

Sometimes, you write into the void and don't think about how you connect with others. I often find myself writing for myself, in a public way.
Anyway, I'm glad that we met, sat at the same table all weekend and caught your own excitement at the possibilities.

The Bud the Teacher effect ... yeah. I like it.

Your friend,
Kevin

I am currently going through a post-bac elementary education class. I need to create a 2-3 minute math power teaching activity. Anyone have any good ideas of where to start?

Thanks,

Hi Jenny,
I also teach 2nd grade and just found the power teaching video with a kindergarten class last night. I want to try it out but I wasn't sure just how much to implement at once or what kind of rewards to use with the smiles and frowns. Any advice or help you've discovered would be great.

I love the idea of only teaching for a few seconds and then having the kids teach each other, but is there a training of the kids and how do you go about that part? Even though I haven't done it yet, I want to implement it no later than after Christmas but now I'm thinking go ahead and start - Christmas is ususally a hard time to teach so what do I have to loose?

This method would be great for my ADD kids, struggling students and ELL kids. Of course my whole class will benefit as well. I'm curious to know if you still need to use cards for individual discipline or if you just use the smiles and frowns all day.

Hi there, I just came across your blog here while looking for some power teaching ideas. I too teach second grade and started out this year power teaching. I have the best class I have ever had and enjoy teaching so much this year! I think we need to start a power teaching blog/website so that we can share ideas about things that are working. I too need help in coming up with gestures and with working the "teach/OK" into my lessons more. Email me if you would like I can share what has worked for me this year!
